“Archives and history – analyzing times of transition”

ONS 2016, Sept. 1. 2016, 10.00-13.00
Clarion Hotel Energy, Stavanger.

Historical studies offer an alternative way to understand how society develops, complementing those offered by economists and other social scientists. Major issues of growth and crises are studied from below and from within, and based on records created in past times by the actors and institutions that make up the economy.

Historical insight gives perspective on contemporary social challenges, helps to explain how they have risen, and can in some cases also define lessons learned and suggest elements in future solutions.

Knowledge and understanding of the near and distant past are impossible to achieve if relevant archives are not preserved. Especially during periods of restructuring, it is important that source material is safeguarded. Understanding the present and making predictions about the future will be very difficult without knowledge of the past.
