Designed by Lunde & Løvseth, the museum building is an exhibit in its own right. Its architecture represents a symbolic interpretation of Norwegian bedrock, the open coastal landscape facing the sea, and offshore installations.

Architectural critics have maintained that no other building in Norway signals its function more clearly than the Norwegian Petroleum Museum. It was officially opened by HM King Harald on 20 May 1999.
